Scott Muni 1930 - 2004
The Relic Rack remembers Scott Muni the legendary New York air personality who died September 28, 2004 after a long illness.
In addition to becoming notable as a pioneer in progressive rock radio, he is remembered as one of the original WABC Good Guys. Yes, WABC Good Guys, as that station had the name before WMCA made it famous. Earlier, Scott was a DJ at WMCA when they were collectively known as the WMCA "Air Force".
As a kid I recall that Scott, Cousin Brucie and Murray The K was on opposite each other at night when I listened while I was doing my homework. I remember when he signed on as a "Swingin' Seven" DJ on WABC in December of 1960 and was among the first to devote a block of time to playing solid gold rock n roll.
In 1961, he shared evenings on WABC with Bruce Morrow when the station billed them as the M + M boys capitalizing on the Yankees M + M boys, Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. I recall too seeing him at a CYO dance at St Leo's in Irvington, NJ. Two non-radio ventures for Scott included running a NY discothèque and hosting a TV music show with Bruce Morrow on WABC TV.
Scott Muni was an integral part of the first ½ century of Rock n Roll radio. He will be missed.
